“Slavery is
terrible for men, but it is far more terrible for women.”
terrible for men, but it is far more terrible for women.”
In
1861, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl was published under the
pseudonym Linda Brent. The narrative, which blends conventions of the
slave narrative, the 19th-century sentimental novel, and the American adventure
genre, is now considered the pre-eminent account of an enslaved woman’s life.
This talk will introduce Harriet Jacobs, a smart, courageous woman whose
incredible yet little-known story vividly depicts the unique evils of slavery
women experienced.
